Critical Need:
Children with neurodevelopmental conditions who experience complex challenges in language and social communication require specialized services to support their development and learning. In Nevada, many families face barriers to accessing these supports, including limited availability of trained providers, long waitlists, and fragmented service systems. These gaps can delay intervention and limit opportunities for children to develop essential language and communication skills during their most critical development period.
How the Need Will Be Addressed:
SOCIAL-NV: Strengthening Outcomes in Communication, Interaction, and Language Development in Nevada will work directly with families and service providers, such as speech-language therapists and behavioral specialists, to better understand current service availability, barriers to access, and areas where families need additional support. Using this information, the project will identify key service gaps and design practical supports to strengthen communication and coordination among providers while improving access for families.
Project Purpose:
Examine the current service needs of Nevada families raising children with neurodevelopmental conditions and complex communication and language challenges.
Design targeted supports to address identified service gaps and barriers.
Develop data-informed recommendations to guide statewide efforts to strengthen services and improve access to care.
Interviews and outreach with families will be implemented across 3 top languages in Nevada in addition to English, including Spanish, Tagalog, and Mandarin/Chinese.
Project Impact:
By identifying gaps and proposing practical solutions, SOCIAL-NV will help Nevada build a stronger, more coordinated system of support for children with communication and language needs. The project will inform state-level decision making, improve service access for families, and help ensure that children receive the early communication support necessary for long-term success in school and the community.
